Why is traveling to Fernando de Noronha so expensive?

Considered one of the most beautiful tourist routes, the Fernando de Noronha archipelago has become one of the most sought after and most expensive destinations to visit in Brazil, see why!

Located 545 km from the capital of Pernambuco, Fernando de Noronha has been the destination of many Brazilian and international travelers. Its tourist attractions, its corals, and its essential beauty attract many tourists to the region, which heats up the economy and adds even more value to this Brazilian paradise.

According to the Administration of Fernando de Noronha, in 2020, the archipelago was visited by more than 30 thousand people, a decrease of 68% compared to 2019, which had received a little more than 108,000 visitors. This decrease is directly linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, which mainly affected the tourism sector. Furthermore, data from the tourist balance showed that most visitors come from São Paulo, followed by Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Bahia.

But after all, how much does it cost to go to Noronha?

Well, for this question we are going to take into account four factors, which are: air tickets, accommodation, food and extra costs. At first, it is worth remembering that Fernando de Noronha is an island, which directly influences prices. The logistics of food, fuel and supplies are directly related to the distance that the island is from the mainland, which ends up resulting in high prices. Gasoline from Noronha, for example, has always been considered one of the most expensive in Brazil, precisely because of the logistics and transport to the island, which also makes taxi, transfer and car rental services more expensive.

Airline tickets

Fernando de Noronha has an airport that was built in 1934, but which has undergone modifications over the years to meet the tourist and logistical demand of the region. Today, it is one of the few commercial airports that operate without a control tower, and its landing and take-off process is done visually. Currently, there are two airlines working in Fernando de Noronha, Gol and Azul.

Ticket prices vary according to the time of year and the dates booked. In high season, which is usually the end of the year, holidays and carnival, prices are usually a little inflated. In a small simulation made on Google flights (with departure from São Paulo), at the end of the year, air tickets cost more than R$4,000, with between R$3,000 and R$4,000 during the vacation period (between June and July) , while in low season it is possible to find flights in the range of R$1.2 thousand. For those leaving Recife, we can find tickets from R$500. Due to the pandemic, the cost of tickets ended up being readjusted, which made transportation to the archipelago more expensive.

Accommodation

Spending a few days staying in Noronha can get pretty salty, mainly because the daily rates cost above the average price on the continent. In traditional hotel consultation platforms, prices range from R$380 to R$1900 a day for two people. On Airbnb, we managed to find good opportunities, such as a hostel and bed in a shared dorm, for around R$130 per person. There is the option of renting a house and single room on the platform, prices can go from R$280 to up to R$860.

Food

As previously mentioned, as it is an island considerably distant from the mainland, the restaurants in Fernando de Noronha have prices consistent with the region, and that end up catering to all tastes. According to the Tripadivisor website, a dish for two at a renowned restaurant on the island costs around R$150 - R$220. In simpler restaurants, but which also cater to the tourist palate, prices can start from R$50 to around R$120. There are also supermarket options on the island, for those who prefer to cook their own food.

Extra costs

In addition to the costs mentioned above, which are practically part of any trip, Fernando de Noronha has extra costs, which are the fees that must be paid to visit the place and the tourist's displacement within the island.

  • Environmental Preservation Fee: is a mandatory fee, which can be issued through the website https://www.noronha.pe.gov.br/turPreservacao.php, or it can be paid when arriving at the airport. The cost of this fee is R$79.20 per day. If the tourist stays 5 days, for example, he will have to pay R$389.68. The website above has the complete table with the days and the respective values;

  • Ticket to the Fernando de Noronha National Marine Park: this ticket is for visiting and getting to know all the attributes of the fauna, flora and natural beauty of Fernando de Noronha. The cost of this ticket for Brazilians is around R$165, for others, the ticket costs R$330. More information can be found on the website https://www.parnanoronha.com.br/entrances.

  • Transport: the island has a public transport system, which costs around 5 reais. However, many of the attractions are a little far from the highway, which can be an impasse. In addition, there is the option of renting a buggy for tours, where prices can vary from R$100 - R$200 per day, and there is also the option of renting a car and taxi.
